Widespread and fairly common breeder countrywide, except in forested and large agricultural areas. The highest density can be found in the Great Plain and NE Hungary. Electric pylons hold 90% of nests. The national breeding population was 15–16 thousand pairs in 1941, 8000 pairs in 1958, 4500–5500 between 1968 and 2014, ca. 4000 since 2016.
