Common breeder at medium and high elevations. Prefers hornbeam-oak and turkey oak forests, but also breeds in different kinds of forests, parks, gardens, even in lowlands. The breeding population increased between 1999 and 2018 (6.4 ± 1.6%, p<0.01). The species can be observed year-round. The Hungarian breeding population winters mainly in N Italy, birds from the north and northeast overwinter in the country.
