Common breeder. Prefers open agricultural areas with trees and windbreaks. Both the breeding (1999–2018: 6.3% ± 1.8%, p<0.01) and wintering (2000–2018: 5.3% ± 2.9%, p<0.05) populations increased. Resident. Its nest-robbing habits may reduce the breeding success of protected birds (e.g. Great Bustard, shorebirds) and game species. Abandoned nests are often used by Red-footed Falcons, Common Kestrels, Eurasian Hobbies and Long-eared Owls.
