Resident and highly sedentary. Most occur in the Northern Hills with smaller populations in Transdanubian ranges. Typically breeds in extensive, mature deciduous forests with high levels of deadwood. Often found primarily in beech but also mixed beech-hornbeam-oak and sometimes alder stands. Avoids conifer plantations and intensively managed forests. Overall trends unknown, but core populations are probably stable whilst some in Transdanubia have vanished or are in decline.
