Occurs every month, very common on passage between September and November and in spring (February– March), primarily east of Tisza River. The Hortobágy is the largest known staging area of the World. Larger flocks also gather on Lake Fehér at Szeged and Lake Kardoskút, on the southern part of the Great Plain. After more than a hundred years, it bred again in 2015 and 2017 in Hungary. Regularly oversummers and overwintering have increased in the past years as well.
