Common breeder throughout the country. Prefers beech and oak forests at medium and high elevations but can also be found in middle-aged and old deciduous forests, mixed forests, larger parks and gardens. Outside the breeding season moves more into inhabited areas and reedbeds. The species can be observed throughout the year but more frequent in spring (mid-February – mid-March) and autumn (late August – mid-November). The breeding population increased moderately between 1999 and 2018 (5.8 ± 1.1%, p<0.01). The trend of wintering season is uncertain (2000–2018, 0.2 ± 1.5%).
