Resident and highly sedentary. Fairly common and widespread, breeding mainly in lowlands and hilly areas. Prefers open deciduous forests and woodlands and edges. Also found in secondary habitats such as old orchards, parks, farmland copses and line of trees, even in urban environments. The overall population was stable until 2008, before a slight but fluctuating increase ensued (6.8 ± 2.4%, p<0.01) between 1999 and 2018. The winter population also increased (8.6 ± 3.3%, p<0.05) between 2000 and 2018.
