Common breeder. Prefers hill deciduous forests and hardwood forests along rivers, but breeds in coniferous-deciduous mixed forests and lowland parks, cemeteries and large gardens with old trees, depending on suitable breeding cavities. The breeding population moderately increased (4.8 ± 1.2%, p<0.01) between 1999 and 2018. The number of overwintering birds also moderately increased (2.0 ± 1.6%, p<0.05) between 2000 and 2018. Resident, there are dispersal movements from late August until October and in March–April.
